Important Message from the Foundation
Several years ago, the Sturges house was in real jeopardy. After it failed to sell at a highly publicized Christie’s auction, it remained on the market for years with no buyer. Located on three valuable lots in Brentwood, the economic incentive to replace its modest 1,100-square-foot footprint with a much larger new residence was substantial.
Out of roughly 500 Frank Lloyd Wright homes ever built, more than 100 have already been lost. The redevelopment pressure is extremely high in multi-million-dollar neighborhoods like Brentwood, where Sturges is located.
To preserve the Sturges House, a philanthropic foundation dedicated to its long-term stewardship was established. Since acquiring the property, the foundation has invested millions of dollars in its purchase, repairs, maintenance, property taxes, historical research, and preservation planning, all without government funding or special tax relief.
Recently, questions have been raised about the property's condition and the foundation's stewardship. The following addresses the most common misconceptions.
